Weekly Book and Craft
Lois Lenski
We are celebrating Lois Lenski's 118th birthday this week! She was born on Oct. 14th, 1893 in Ohio. For over fifty years Lois Lenski pursued her professional career as an illustrator and author of books for children. During that time she illustrated some fifty books for other authors, and wrote and illustrated nearly 100 of her own books. Lenski's writing included picture books and stories for very young children as well as intermediate works for older children and young adults. Although she wrote primarily prose, Lenski also published books of poetry, songs and plays for children.

Lenski's books are a nostalgic look back in time with milk delivered in milk cans on a truck, stop and go signs and kids playing in green grass. Lenski's many books have become classics in children's literature. Her books depicted children's lives much more realistically than other children's authors. She enthusiastically tackled areas and subjects long neglected in writing for children. The popularity of her works and their distribution in other languages are testimony both to her skill as a writer and to her continuing appeal to children.

One of the most popular series features Lenski's best-loved character, Mr. Small. This versatile hero becomes an aviator, sailor, engineer, farmer, fireman, cowboy, policeman, and father. In her autobiography Journey Into Childhood, Lenski credited her son Stephen with being the inspiration for Mr. Small. When watching Stephen and his friends playing, Lenski noticed that--contrary to what many adults believe--the boys never gave their imaginary automobiles, trains, or planes a personality, but instead were more concerned with being the driver of that vehicle.
                                             hat
To honor Mr. Small, we will make a hat! This can a a mail carriers hat, a policeman's hat, or anything you want it to be. Simply color in the hat and badge, then staple two long strips of paper to either side of the hat and fit to your child's head. Tape the badge to your shirt and you are ready jump into any of Mr. Small's worlds!

Johnny Appleseed
Book and Craft "Blog"
This week we are focusing our attention on Johnny Appleseed. Johnny's real name was John Chapman and he was born in Massachusetts on Sept. 26, 1774. His family grew apples, among other things, on their farm.

In 1797 he was 23 and he decided to move West. He walked to the Western side of Pennsylvania, bringing apple seeds from home. He planted the seeds he brought and more from home in his orchard. He would sell his sapling trees to settlers and was known to give away trees as well.

In 1804, he moved to Ohio, but we wasn't one to keep still and moved around often. He died in 1845 in Indiana after he got sick walking through a snow storm. Johnny was known for his kindness, his love of nature and animals.

Let's honor Johnny with some good books and a craft! Check out Read About Johnny Appleseed by Stephen Feinstein, The True Tale of Johnny AppleseedApples by Jacqueline Farmer. Celebrate family and apples with Apple Picking Time by Michele Benoit Slawson.

Now for the craft!
Stop in the library to pick up a kit, or look on line for a picture of Johnny Appleseed that you can color. You only need a picture from the waist up. Color in Johnny as you think he might look. Next, cut strips of blue paper and create a short paper chain to represent his legs. Lastly, cut out shoes and attach them to the end of his legs.

Happy Johnny Appleseed Day!
Check back next week for our next topic!
