Genealogy and Local History at the
Jacksonville Public Library

The Jacksonville Public Library maintains a Special Collections Room which is made up of material pertaining to the history and people of Jacksonville and Morgan County.  This material is often useful to genealogists and those interested in local history.  Some historical and genealogical material related to the state of Illinois and other Illinois counties is also available.  Introduce yourself to the most popular parts of our Special Collection with our getting started guide.

Highlights of the Special Collections Room include:

Jacksonville City Directories  (1866-Present)
Morgan County Atlas and Plat Books
Morgan County Cemetery Indexes
Local History Vertical Files (containing photographs, newspaper clippings and other assorted materials)

The mission of our Special Collections is twofold -- to provide public access to the materials in the collection while at the same time preserving for future generations the sometimes rare and fragile materials.  Therefore, all Special Collection material is available for use in the library only; however, all books in the Special Collection can be found using the library's catalog.  The Special Collections Room is not a browsing area.  Any hours the library is open, the library staff will pull requested items from the room for patron use.  In some instances, the library staff may grant patron entrance to the Special Collections room when deemed necessary.

The Jacksonville Public Library also maintains copies of local Jacksonville newspapers dating as far back as the 1830's.  These copies are available on microfilm and may be viewed, printed, or scanned using one of the library's three microfilm readers.  Patrons may ask at the main circulation desk for these microfilms.  In addition to all of the above, the library subscribes to two pay databases (Ancestry Library Edition and Heritage Quest Online) and provides access to other free genealogy sites through its web site.

Additional genealogical help may be found locally at the Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society Library (416 S. Main), at Illinois College, MacMurray College, or the Morgan County Clerk's office located inside the county courthouse building.
